Thanksgiving at Dumont Dunes '04
November 26-28, 2004

What: Returning to tradition, we will once again enjoy Thanksgiving at Dumont Dunes. Lots of food, toy & truck runs will be the order of the weekend. If roasted rattlesnake is supposed to taste like chicken, would roasted desert lizard taste like turkey? (Just a thought!)

Where: Dumont Dunes is located North of Mexico and South of Canada but much closer to Baker, California. Within the above-mentioned extended boundary, live over 200 million people. However, the un-official population of Dumont varies from weekend to weekend. Most of the time, the desert critters outnumber their human counterparts.

How to get there: Leave your Leer jet at home and hop on Interstate 15 North to Baker. Be aware of Cal-Trans construction in the Devore area of the Cajon Pass. Traffic delays are commonplace for the next few months or so. From Baker, go North on Highway 127 for approximately 34 miles. There is a sign on the right side of the road marking the entrance to Dumont Dunes. Proceed on this super highway (dirt road) for approximately 4-5 miles (this is a good time to check the accuracy of your Odometer, GPS, Compass or Sextant). This road will take you through the main camping area and the edge of the main dunes. Follow the edge of the dunes to the left. Camp 20 (our camp) will be at the East end of the dunes. Look for member’s trucks, signs and the Blazer Club banner.

Communications: We will monitor CB Channel 37. Cell phones, satellite phones, internet phones using your wireless connections or good old fashioned smoke signals (if you get lost) are all acceptable alternatives.

Facilities: Although there are many 4 & 5 star hotels in ‘nearby’ Las Vegas, ours will be primitive camping only. Who knows, maybe the Shoshone Indians will build a Casino and Hotel there before next year’s outing. In the meantime, bring water, firewood, porta-potti and all other camping equipment or one of many trailers our members seem to be acquiring.

Weather: El Nino seems to be back with us so the weather can be a factor. You still have plenty of time to acquire those battery operated socks and break out that rain gear you haven’t used since the draught started.

Rules & Regs: Dumont Dunes is managed by the BLM (760) 256-2729. However, since there have been recent rumors that terrorists maybe planning to blowup the sand dunes, Homeland Security may also be patrolling the area. They should be easy to spot: dark suits, lapel pins and aviator sunglasses.

Emergency: Nearest hospital/Barstow (760) 256-1725 / 733-4448 / 246-1771. Ambulances (aka Jim’s private truck) are available in Baker & Shoshone and Flight-for-life (aka Mike’s private helicopter) from Las Vegas.
